Stay With Me

Ayobami Adebayo

Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo begins with a couple desperate to have a child, hopefully a son, a young Nigerian couple struggle to meet the expectations of family and society. A strong sense of the interplay of traditional culture, modernity and political unrest. Yejide and Akin are university educated and relatively well to do. Yejide runs her own hair salon and Akin works for a bank. Yet they both come from traditional polygamous families, and there is much pressure on Akin to take on a second wife something Yejide vehemently opposes. After four years, Yejide believes that she will become a mother until her family shows up with her husbands second wife

From the beginning of their marriage, Yejide and her husband had agreed that polygamy was not an option, but after four years of trying, she becomes desperate to conceive in order to save her marriage. A story reflects a culture in which a woman’s role is seen as bearing a child for her husband in a society where multiple wives are acceptable.

Lex Reads Review

Ayobami Adebayo’s debut novel is incredible. It doesn’t read like a debut novel, and her characters are truly beyond memorable. Shortlisted for the prestigious Women’s Prize for Fiction, there’s no doubt that Adebayo’s work will endure for a lifetime. Not only will you be entertained, but you’ll also learn about and understand the customs of Nigeria and the expectations placed on some women. This novel is a masterpiece – simple as that.
