Every recommendation, review, and book club pick is selected with purpose—to create a better, more enriching reading experience for you.
Many readers struggle to find meaningful stories from underrepresented voices, and I aim to make those discoveries easier and more accessible. My goal is to bring powerful Black narratives into the spotlight and build a community that appreciates their value.
Book of the Month
This month, we’re diving into Red Clay by Charles B. Fancher, a captivating historical novel. Set primarily in Alabama from the Civil War through the early 20th century, the narrative skillfully intertwines themes of family, loyalty, betrayal, and the enduring impact of slavery on both the oppressed and the oppressors. Inspired by Fancher’s family history, tells the story of an enslaved black family and their white owners. When the family learns about the passing of their grandfather, they return to Red Clay, Alabama to grieve and lay him to rest. The family notice a white woman in attendance and is puzzled when she stated ” … a lifetime ago, my family owned yours.” This striking introduction sets the stage for a masterfully crafted narrative that moves fluidly between time periods, revealing the intricate connections between these two families sharing the same surname but divided by the brutal institution of slavery.
